A Confused Noise

WHAT I LEARNED WHEN I READ THE BIBLE

The word babel originally meant “gate of god.” The people of Babylon thought they were physically closer to God than any place on earth. They viewed themselves as the cultural and intellectual elite of their day. God has given each of us a free will, and His desire is that we seek to follow Him. But often we choose our own path, and we challenge His authority. It never ends well. Thousands of years later, the word babel is still in our vocabulary, only now, it no longer means “gate of god,” but “a confused noise made by a number of voices.” If we have a friend that is rambling, we might say, “Quit your babbling.” Our human wisdom, without the guidance of God, is nothing more than folly and confusing noise.
