Stress Over Preparing Food for a Party

Updated: Mar 23, 2021

Q: I would host more parties, but I do not cook. I stress over what to do about food.

A: Hey girl, I am with you! I can cook, and I think I do a good job, but it is not what I enjoy. In today’s world, you can purchase almost anything, and in many cases, it can be better than homemade. If you enjoy baking but not cooking, then buy your main meal but bake the dessert. This will help you avoid feeling guilty about your lack of culinary skills. Finding a good caterer you can develop a relationship with is always a good idea. Most grocery stores have a deli section where you can place orders for take-out. If the cost overwhelms you, then invite fewer people. Or instead of hosting a dinner party, have friends over just for cocktails. This is usually less expensive, allows for a wider variety of take-out food choices, and it can be a more relaxed atmosphere. If there is a culinary school in your area, see if you can hire their student chefs. They need the work and experience, and this is often less expensive than a full-time chef. Catering from larger restaurants can be pricey. Do you have a friend that operates a boutique catering service out of her home? Her overhead is lower, so her prices may be a little better. Keep your menu simple and order foods that are in season. All of this will keep your costs down.
